My Senior Dog has more Energy than Last Year

Chipper, my twelve year-old cocker spaniel, has more energy when we go for walks than he did

this spring. He often leads the way as we walk around our neighborhood (as long as interesting scents don’t distract him), and he now chases squirrels—something he hasn’t done in years.

What happened?

Although he had been on glucosamine for years, it hadn’t seemed to make much difference to his arthritic joints. But a few months ago, I started using Welly Tails Senior Dog Care, and all I know, is that shortly afterwards, I noticed that he had more energy.

What’s in it? Welly Tails Senior Dog Care Product

It has glucosamine and MSM for arthritis, but it also has several forms of Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA, EPA & ALA, these boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and promote a healthy coat) and probiotics (which promote good digestion), plus digestive enzymes. Here’s what the label says:

  • Strong joint health support
  • Brain and Eye health support
  • 8 Powerful Digestive Enzymes
  • 7 Immunity supporting probiotics
  • Cranberry fruit powder
  • Phytonutrients and Antioxidants
  • L-carnitine for energy management

Why Give Supplements?

Many dog foods do not provide all the essential nutrients needed by senior dogs to remain active and healthy. Dr. Marty Becker from Vet Street  recommends the following supplements for senior dogs:

  • Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) which include (Omega-3 and Omega-6 which occur in oils that help promote brain health, boost immunity, and promote a shiny coat.
  • Glucosamine with Chondroitin Sulfate for arthritis and works in conjunction with EFAs
  • Probiotics – the “good” bacteria that aides with digestion and fighting off disease and stress
    • Many times when my dogs develop severe diarrhea my vet will prescribe powerful probiotics – and they really do help.

Most of these recommendations are in Welly Tails Senior Dog Care. Here’s a listing from the label: Label for Welly Tails Senior Dog Product

Welly Tails Senior Dog Care is a powder that forms gravy when mixed with your dog’s food. Both my dogs ate it up. I highly recommend it.

  1. This product sounds comprehensive. I know you were treating Chipper’s arthritis, but with the probiotics to help with digestion, and the fatty acids to boost immunity and promote brain health, this product is helping in so many ways. Fantastic cumulative effects from one product! Very convenient. And I’m glad that Chipper is chasing squirrels again! May he only catch them in his dreams:)

  2. I tried to comment yesterday and it didn’t show so trying again. I’m glad you’ve found a great answer for your dog. My Magic also has a new attitude, once we changed his food to a “brain food.” *s*

  3. That’s so great that Chipper is feeling more…chipper! My senior girl is 12.5 and I do say, although she has gone deaf, she’s still pretty active! I do give all of my Huskies supplements, including glucosamine, omega 3 oil, coconut oil, and MSM. Thanks for the review of this…I have to say, I like the idea of it becoming a gravy and am sure the dogs do, too!

  4. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a senior dog “get younger.” Jasmine battled many challenges but other than the last one we always managed to get her to bounce back to a full life she enjoyed.

  5. I’m so glad you found something to help keep Chipper young and active! I’ve always given Buster a joint supplement as prevention since he was quite young, so I hope that will pay off in the end once he’s a bit older.

  6. Interesting post. Harley had a physical not too long ago. I talked to the Doodle Doc about supplements for him. Now that he’s eight years old I wonder if he needs it. So far, I’m passively looking at various ones. Thanks for the information

  7. Hi there! Mom has the Bessie the Basset on “Dasuquin” she calls dasa chewies. She is kind of forgetful, though about giving them to the doggie daily. Bessie likes the chewies, but she’ probably like the powder you mention, too, ’cause she loves gravy! Mew Mew!

  8. It’s so wonderful when we can find something that works for our pets (old or young) to make them feel better an of course there is nothing that makes us happier than to see our dogs happy and energetic and feeling great! Well done Chipper, you chase those squirrels!
