Why aren’t dogs allowed at Maggie Daley Park?

Maggie Daley Park opened last month with controversy over the reversal of the Chicago Park District’s decision to ban dogs from the park (http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141210/loop/maggie-daley-park-dog-ban-park-district-reverses-course-angers-residents ). With nearby Millennium Park also having a ban on dogs, where do all the residents in the nearby high rises go? Yes there are other places to walk their dogs, but these two parks are huge. Why the reversal from the 2012 decision to allow dogs? The claim is that dogs and their owners leave their messes behind. I think more access to baggies and enforcement is all that’s needed.

My husband and I visited the ice skating ribbon last weekend and tried skating for the first time this year. I loved the park, and the open spaces, but why not allow dogs? Obviously they would be banned from the skating rink and the playground, but why not allow them on leash on the long walkways? My Cassie had visited the old ice rink, many years ago when this park was part of Grant Park and the ice rink saw little usage compared to the nearby Millennium Park rink. My sister was able to hold Cassie on a leash while watching us skate; but no more. Chicago has become more dog friendly in recent years, so why this restriction?
