Snow Protection

This past week the Chicago area had a blizzard with about 1 ½ feet of snow dumping on us. Cassie loves to roll in the snow, creating snow angels and taking a snow bath. Over the years I’ve found several essentials for dogs:
•   A coat, preferably fleece lined that wraps around the dog’s belly. This makes it very easy to get on. It blocks the wind.
•   Sweaters, both for inside the house when it is very cold, or under the coat.
•   Musher’s secret paw wax http://musherssecret.net/ – a real must have. A dab of wax between their toes helps protect against snow balls forming in their toes. It also seems to give their paws some oil, helping prevent cracks.
•   Booties. I’ve tried several kinds and Muttluks work the best. http://www.muttluks.com/product_home.php?cat=2 They ride higher on the leg, preventing snow from collecting inside. But putting them on all four legs per dog is a bit of a challenge. I usually use the paw wax as my first choice, just because it’s a lot easier.
