Thunderstorm Anxiety in Dogs

The storm season began early this year! We had thunderstorms last night and Chipper kept me awake. I put him on Solliquin pills a week ago and apparently the effects can take up to 30 days to show an effect. Last year I had used Harmonease, which is no longer produced, so my vet gave me Solliquin.

Do you have a fraidy dog?

I tried anxiety wraps with my springer, but they only made her hot.

What worked well last night was locking Chipper in his cage. He settled down very quickly and I got some sleep!

  1. Aw, I’m glad the blanket and crate worked well for Chipper while the 30 day period passes. Luckily, Haley isn’t afraid of storms but I do notice subtle changes as she ages in that she seems just a little bit uneasy if the thunder is super loud. Hang in there Chipper and I hope you have a quiet spring storm season.

  2. Oh, poor babies! My Husky is afraid of thunder & fireworks. I haven’t tried any of these things yet, I’ve been trying to just make the tv louder and let her go in the closet. I need to get some calming remedies though.

    • Calming remedies have made all the difference. Now my dogs are anxious just for the half hour that the thunderstorm is directly overhead and not for the hours before and afterwards when they hear low rumblings way in the distance. I highly recommend them.

  3. Have you ever heard of ZenCrate? I just saw an article about it and put it on Facebook. Google it- it’s amazing. My dogs are fine with storms but are crate-trained so if they ever need a safe place they have access. Also, I have found Rescue Remedy has worked wonders for some of my clients. They have a version for dogs.

    • I just checked out ZenCrates and they look pretty pricey.Chipper is pretty skittish of new things, so he likes his old crates, even though they don’t play music.I should try Rescue Remedy again. I tried it many years ago and it didn’t seem to help that dog, but now I have different dogs.
